Aiming your putter

For 30+ years I struggled aiming my putter well or maybe I should say aligning the putter-face perpendicular or square to my intended target’s line.  Even though I felt I was aiming well, the putter was actually aiming slightly left.  And because of this, I had to make a compensation during my stroke to hit the ball on line.  Through trial and error and many a sore back, I found an optical trick that not only helped my ‘aim’ improve, it also helped my stroke.
